U.S. Department of State: Unsafe Areas to Travel

In March 1, 2014

Travel Warnings

The U.S. Department of State issues Travel Warnings when they want you to consider very carefully whether you should go to a country at all.

Examples of reasons for issuing a Travel Warning might include:

    • civil war
    • unstable government
    • ongoing intense crime or violence
    • frequent terrorist attacks

It is important to know the risks of traveling to these places and to strongly consider not going to them at all.

NOTE: Travel Warnings remain in place until the situation changes; some have been in effect for years.

Travel Alerts

The U.S. Department of State also issues Travel Alerts for short-term events they think you should know about when planning travel to a country.

Examples of reasons for issuing a Travel Alert might include:

  • an election season that is bound to have many strikes
  • demonstrations
  • disturbances
  • a health alert like an outbreak of H1N1
  • evidence of an elevated risk of terrorist attacks

NOTE: When these short-term events are over, the U.S. Department of State will cancel the Travel Alert.

Please visit the U.S. Department of State website to see if there are any travel warnings or travel alerts in an area you are planning to travel to.
