Washington Driver’s License Renewal Process to Change July 1st

In July 3, 2018
As of July 1st, the Washington driver’s license renewal process is changing to comply with new REAL ID requirements. Washington state has been resistant to these changes in years prior, and are looking to get up to speed with new regulations to help prepare the public for October 2020, when you’ll need a REAL ID compliant license in order to go through airport security.

All regular Washington state driver’s licenses issued after July 1st will now display a “Federal Limits Apply” marker. This will help distinguish between regular licenses and REAL ID compliant ones. A standard driver’s license can still continue to be used for driving, but officials are urging people to be ready for the REAL ID shift, especially if you plan on traveling via airplane.

Washington state has plans to launch educational outreach campaigns to help educate the public on what their license options are. Stay tuned for more information! You can also find more information about REAL ID at Official Travel Documents.
